System Requirements

Purchasing Information and System Requirements

The best way to learn more about the CPU units and software is to attend a CPU workshop. Some workshops are designed to help learners develop a robust understanding in particular areas of physics. Other workshops are offered to prepare teachers for using CPU materials in secondary or college classrooms.
Currently the CPU activities and software are designed for use on a Macintosh computer with OpenDoc software installed. Materials may also be printed and used in a pencil and paper format, preferably with at least one demonstration computer connected to a projection system.

The system requirements are:

Macintosh (68040k) or PowerPC Macintosh Computer
System 7.5 or later
OpenDoc 1.2 Software installed
300 MB hard drive space available for installation of all software
16 MB RAM minimum, 32+ MB recommended

The "CPU Software and Activities, Preliminary Version" CD is available for $30 (including shipping and handling) after July 1, 1998. The Macintosh only CD contains all of the OpenDoc versions of the CPU units and associated software, except for the Waves and Nature of Matter units. This Preliminary Version is provided "as is." Users can visit the CPU website for responses to frequently asked questions (including common technical questions) and additional activities. Neither the CPU Project nor the San Diego State University Foundation will provide any other technical support.
Through August 31, 1998, teachers who have attended a CPU workshop will receive one copy of the OpenDoc CPU software for their classroom use. CPU software may also be purchased by other individuals and by schools.
To purchase the CD entitled "CPU Software and Activities, Preliminary Version" send a check for $30 and shipping information to the address below. Checks must be drawn on an United States bank. International shipping is an additional $10.

In late 1998 all of the CPU units and software will be available in html and Java formats and will run on either Macintosh or Windows computers. The html/java version will probably be available from a commercial publisher. It is possible that there will be some limited special availability to teachers who attend a CPU workshop. Visit the CPU website later this year for more information!
